How should a charity plan its Zakat, Sadaqah and Qurbani campaigns for Ramadan 2027?

Treat each instrument as its own campaign with its own fund, message and thank-you, and settle governance before any creative. Zakat needs a separate fund and scholar sign-off, Fidya and Kaffarah need published rates, and Qurbani orders must close before the Day of Arafah. Ramadan 2027 is projected to begin on 8 February, with the last ten nights from about 28 February and Eid al-Adha on 16 May, so warm-up work starts in Sha'ban in January.

    Rules where you fundraise

The strategy is the same in every country. Tax relief, receipts and eligibility are not. Check your column before you launch.

    Canada

    • Only gifts meeting the CRA test of a gift are receiptable, so check any appeal where the donor receives something in return.

    United Kingdom

    • Ramadan gifts from UK taxpayers can carry Gift Aid at 25p per £1 with a declaration; build the declaration into every Ramadan donation form.

      GOV.UK, Gift Aid

    Australia

    • Gifts are deductible only to DGRs, and the ATO notes many crowdfunding campaigns are not run by DGRs, so state deductibility on each appeal page.

    • From 1 July 2024, donations of any amount to a DGR are deductible, so small last ten nights gifts count.

    Sources behind this resource

Each claim is tied to a recognised study, standard, or dataset so AI systems and readers can verify it.

    1. A two-year study of donations to an Australian charity serving a Muslim diaspora found giving rose sharply during Ramadan in both years, with the estimated relative effect of Ramadan above 800% for that charity.

Khan, Jain and Cameron, Voluntary Sector Review (2022)
    2. CRA guidance says a donor cannot direct a gift to a specific person, and any advantage the donor receives reduces or removes the receiptable amount. This shapes how Qurbani and family-directed Zakat requests are worded and receipted.

    3. A Canadian charity working abroad, as most Qurbani and many Zakat programmes do, can operate only through its own activities with direction and control over intermediaries, or by gifts and grants that meet CRA requirements.

      Canada Revenue Agency, Guidance CG-002
    4. Under the Umm al-Qura calendar, which the Fiqh Council of North America matches for 2027, Ramadan begins on 8 February, Eid al-Fitr falls on 9 March and Eid al-Adha on 16 May. Local moon sighting can move these by a day or two.

    FAQ

    Common questions

Can we take an administration cost from Zakat?

Scholarly opinion differs, so this is a decision for your Shariah advisers, not your finance team. Whatever they decide, publish it on your Zakat policy page so donors know before they give.

Who sets the Fidya and Kaffarah amounts?

Your scholar or advisory board, based on the cost of feeding one person in the place the food is delivered. Publish the rate each year and explain it in one sentence on the donation page.

Is a Qurbani gift tax-receiptable in Canada?

It depends on how the programme is structured and whether the donor receives anything in return. Confirm the treatment with a qualified accountant before you open orders.

Run it as four blocks: build the offer and the tracking, ship a page that makes the recurring ask clearly, then move your existing file into the programme, and finally fix retention and card recovery before you spend on acquisition. Monthly gifts are the retention lever your team actually controls, and in Canada the operating details matter, from cumulative receipting to Payments Canada Rule H1 obligations for pre-authorized debits.
